BACKGROUND

Character Wiki

The short version: Julian Subatoi Bashir was born in the Federation in 2341 in the post-scarcity idealistic space future. Developmentally delayed, his parents had him illegally genetically augmented, changing not just his intelligence but almost everything about him, including his height and weight. His family moved, forged school records, and changed his school to cover it up. He went from struggling to star pupil and no one questioned anything about it because they weren't about to punish success.

While he almost became a tennis player (until his parents pressured him out of it) he also showed an inclination towards medicine from an early age, repairing his treasured stuffed bear Kukalaka, and feeling sadness over seeing a young girl die when he and his father were trapped with her family in an ion storm. It sadly turned out that an herb nearby could've saved her life and the fact something could've been done for her if someone'd had the right knowledge stuck with Julian for years after. Originally, Julian feared doctors and thought they could control life and death, even worrying as a child they might decide to make him sick if they wanted. But he wanted to know what they knew and after becoming a doctor and gaining that knowledge he eventually realized he just wanted to help people.

At age 15, after learning his parents had gotten him genetically augmented as a child (a childhood experience he hadn't really understood until then), he grew estranged from his parents and stopped going by their nickname for him (Jules). Due to the Federation having a history of fearing Gene Augments due to genocidal wars they caused in the past, he saw himself as an unnatural freak and felt they'd changed everything but his name. He resented them for killing his old self in the process because he couldn't measure up in their eyes.

Hiding his illegal genetic status, which would've barred him from Starfleet and praticing medicine, he signed up to join Starfleet and graduated second in his class at Starfleet Medical Academy, only avoiding graduating valedictorian by purposefully getting a question wrong in his final exam because he hated the pressure on him.

Due to excelling in medical school, he had his choice of postings post-graduation and chose to be chief medical officer of Deep Space Nine, a space station far away from everything else. He felt it was a place he could do medical research and also engage in adventurous "frontier medicine" - though he initially accidentally insulted the station's first officer by forgetting this "frontier" was her home.

Due to its position near a wormhole to another galactic quadrant, the space station is at the crossroads of lots of conflict and a brewing war with a brutal occupying alliance called the Dominion, that has conquered much of the Delta Quadrant on the other side of the wormhole. Ruled by controlling shapeshifters, the Founders, they have been manipulating events and fomenting conflict between different peoples in the Alpha Quadrant.

Between this and the threat of the Dominion and their dangerous shock troops, Julian has had to Hawkeye Pierce it up and doctor during wartime more and more, holding people together as best as he can. The situation grows more grim all the time and recently Julian was captured and imprisoned at a brutal Dominion internment camp, while a shapeshifting Changeling took his place to sabotage Starfleet and the Alpha Quadrant.

PERSONALITY

Julian is an absolutely brilliant doctor and he knows it, extremely intelligent and out there dealing with some weird-ass space diseases and conditions. He can treknobabble with the best of 'em, medical edition (tm).

While his idealism has been fraying, he's generally glib but positive, dryly sarcastic, sometimes excitable, adventurous (with a penchant for spycraft and historic battles in the holodeck). However, he can also be extremely arrogant due his intelligence and brilliance at medicine, accidentally condescending, and overly talkative. He often misses social cues and can be clueless to the fact he's annoying people (though he's gotten better about it over time.) He can sometimes be idealistic to the point of naivete but the growing war has started to become a bit of a sobering influence, causing him to realize the greater universe can be a very ugly place. His stay at Dominion Internment camp 371 seems to have been a turning point in causing him to be a bit more serious.

He's also a bit neurotic because of the genetic engineering, a secret he's had to keep for most of his life and his resentment towards his parents is a palpable thing. At his canonpoint, it's been years since he's even seen them - he's very content to make his friends and coworkers more important to his life.

Julian also sees love as a sometimes conditional thing and tries a bit too hard to be liked. Since he thinks love often has to be earned, he has a tendency to talk up his accomplishments as he expects to only be cared about for how brilliant he and what he can do instead of who he is. Since this just makes him seem to have a huge ego, this has led to his best friend Miles O'Brien pointing out that people tend to love him or hate him with very little room in between.

He's also a bit of an incurable romantic, falling for people pretty easily, and prone to feeling a little lonely at times. This can cause him to be a bit too pushy romantically or have bad priorities in who he tries to win over. He does have limits and changes course once he realizes he's mishandled a situation, but it's an area where there's still room to improve because it definitely is a bit unethical. This has sometimes crossed over with a tendency to try to "fix" people's disabilities, ironically mirroring what was done to him growing up.

Despite his flaws, he's largely very empathetic and dedicated to his patients, dealing with them with equal parts humor (to put them at ease) and gentleness. He often finds the right tack to deal with even the difficult ones that throw themselves a little too bodily at threats. He's willing to undergo great personal risk to offer medical aid to anyone that needs it, and is principled enough to want to even help enemies if they're sick or injured. He can be deeply passionate about his convictions, decrying things he sees as cruel or immoral very forcefully.

POWERS AND ABILITIES

Skills: No canon powers. He has some advantages from the genetic engineering in having an extremely high level of genius, great athleticism, fast reflexes, and great hand-eye coordination.

But these traits are still within the realm of normal human possibility - it's just rare to find them all in one person. I'll also not be leaning hard on the intellect making him do mental calculations: it was something hated even by the actor and quietly dropped over time.

That said, his medical skills, though geared around his era and its equipment, are exceptional, and he's managed to find cures for multiple diseases, including a way to inoculate children of a world suffering from a disease genetically engineered to destroy their population. He's also managed to provide what little care could be provided in situations with very little equipment and supplies.

He only has some rudimentary skills at other fields like engineering, though. While he's taken an extension course, it's not his specialty. Though he's well-read and enjoys things like literature, his intelligence is highly specialized in medicine.

Somnia Game Powers: Kimera Form, which has positives and negatives. In Julian's case, he's constantly mutating features from three animals as a kind of whack gryphon: Lion, owl, and snake.
